Content Chronicles: A Sit-Down with Our Newest Intern

If you’ve been reading the Fresh Tracks blog for awhile, you've probably heard me compare social media marketing to sailing. And even though I've never actually stepped foot on a sailboat, I do understand the importance of… you know… the sail.

For social media marketers, content acts as a sail, steering our strategy through the ever-changing winds of algorithm shifts, consumer psychology, and platform evolutions. And as those changes become more and more frequent, the need for compelling and engaging content has never been more vital.

This Spring, we're thrilled to welcome Maddie Lee onboard as our Chair 8 Content Intern! Armed with the latest trends and a steady filming hand, Maddie brings a unique Gen Z perspective to our team as we chart new waters. To kick off her internship, I sat down with Maddie to hear her thoughts on the future of social media content and her hopes for this position.

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! My name is Maddie Lee. I am a second semester senior at NC State University studying psychology. I have always had a passion for marketing and am enjoying the opportunity to bring my psychological perspective to this field!

How did you become interested in content creation, and what led you to pursue an internship in this field?

My work as a retail associate allowed me to dip my toes into the water of content creation. At this specialty store, I ran their Instagram and became fascinated with the analytical side of marketing. I have continued to gravitate towards social media marketing as I ran my sorority’s Instagram and provided some interim freelance photography work for a clothing boutique. I never considered content creation and or marketing as a career for myself but as I continued to delve into this realm, I decided to take it a step further to a place where I can gain practical experience and learn from those around me!

What aspects of content creation do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome those challenges?

It is challenging to maintain a steady flow of high-quality content, while remaining creatively-inspired. Creating specific content requires attention to detail, but it is important to remain open-minded and flexible to new ideas! It is interesting to note that performance on social media platforms, like Instagram, can vary even with almost identical content. Understanding and adapting to the nuances of the social media algorithm is very important. I also think collaboration is a wonderful strategy to overcome these challenges, bringing fresh perspectives and different creative energies is crucial to content creation!

How have you seen content on social media change in the last few years? What influence does Generation Z have on the changing landscape of content creation?

What immediately comes to mind is the presence of TikTok. In recent years, we have seen a significant shift in social media content. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have reshaped the realm of content creation and user engagement. The rise of short-form video content highlights a more authentic, purpose-driven form of visual storytelling. I am confident this form of content creation will remain with Generation Z’s presence in the work world.

How do you stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices in content creation?

Being thoroughly immersed in the digital world, I naturally keep myself informed on industry trends and the latest content creation techniques. I consistently explore various media channels and platforms, whether this is scrolling through my personal Instagram and clicking on paid advertisements or listening to a podcast from my favorite influencer. The dynamic nature of our digital age allows me to remain well-informed and adaptable in the evolving field of content creation.

Do you have a favorite brand you follow on social media? What are they doing well that draws your attention?

@aliceandolivia is hands down my favorite brand to follow on Instagram. Their unconventional visuals, vibrant colors, and authentic vibe have me hooked. Most of their pieces are way out of my comfort zone, but that's what makes it so inspiring and captivating. Their content is a perfect mix of product shots, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and fast-paced reels, keeping me engaged and eagerly awaiting their next post.

If you could pick a dream brand or industry to create content for what would it be?

I would love to create content for @schumacher1889. I love their unique yet timeless fabric prints, wallpapers, trims, and pillows. While their current Instagram posts mostly feature static room shots, I envision bringing in more dynamic and engaging content. This could include reels showcasing home installations, artist and fashion collaborations, a spotlight on the special family history behind the Schumacher brand. This shift would bring a fresh and immersive experience to their followers!

Finally, what is the greatest skill or lesson you’ve learned so far as an intern at Chair 8?

This is my first professional experience in the marketing world! I have learned so much in my first few weeks. As an intern, I am here to learn and ask questions. The Chair 8 team has been incredibly supportive, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with this team and I cannot wait to see what else is in store this spring!
